that controller did an amazing job–period.
that was very well put together!
nice work!
“at that point” meaning they were climbing when they lost power. They traded altitude for speed in order to maintain airflow over the wings and consequently, control of the aircraft.
@83bismuth: Without thrust you can’t have both. You can maintain control if you have speed.
Without engines? Think again. Besides: in flight, speed = altitude.
they need both
right but initial take off speed is 180k’s and stall speed is also 180k’s so by the time he was over G.W.bridge he should have been doing close to 250k’s
ahh thanks for info
i hold a multi engine commercial… im putting the career on hold now since there arent any opportunities available… but yes when i was a student pilot i was flying a cessna 152 from long beach to palomar to redlands when my engine started oscillating the very very very good thing is i was near redlands at that time whew.
you are pilot ??
PETA will be all over sully now!!! those poor birds… Seriously, i almost died as a student pilot when my plane’s engine died down on me, and the feeling is so awful so i salute you capt. your awfulness feeling is times 155 plus 5.
It’s amazing video and well done.
They needed every option as it became available. If they had succeded in a relight, then the other runways may have been possible. You’re te only poster I’ve seen who doesn’t think the guy was spot on.
They needed speed, not aktitude at that point.
They’re taught Aviate, Navigate, Communicate in that order. You’re right.
It’s their job to “echo” traffic back to the pilot, and to make absolutely certain what the pilot has said. Not only that, this was an emergency situation. You don’t just ask the pilot once, and then think, “oh well, I hope he gets it.” Next time you fly, be glad they do this.
Its been edited, they’ve chopped another aircraft message off halfway through the first words. No idea what they are saying, but you can hear it in movie tE_5eiYn0D0 at 5:19
What a true HERO! People like him really do restore my faith in humanity. Unbelievable. This man deserves every medal and award possible.
Poor birds haha great skills. These guys are true professionals.

“If anybody wants me, I’ll be in the Hudson River.
Bring beer, condoms, and flotation devices. over”
he was not stupid not one bit. he was trying to give the pilot options. remember, the control tower is nowhere in sight so has to rely on the pilot to relay his messages. he was trying his best to get him to the nearest airstrip intact.
it did go down. that airplane just had the proper pilot behind the wheel. it glided into the hudson. remember there are controls to maneuver the wings, the air movement, etc. pilot did an amazing job!
Beautifully handled by the flight controller also! He did a tremdously good job in keeping contact with the pilot, communicating with the other airfields and still keeping focus in redirecting other aeroplanes while the whole thing was going on. BRAVO!
We’re going to be in the Hudson = I drink your milkshake
Sully, you have The Right Stuff.
lol epic line!!!
