The massive volcanic ash cloud that’s brought European air travel to a virtual standstill, has stranded an estimated 32000 people hoping to travel to or from Russia. Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has ordered emergency measures to deal with the unprecedented crisis. The Dutch airline KLM and Germany’s Lufthansa have carried out test flights through the ash cloud. They reported no damage to their aircraft, however air space in around 20 countries remains closed, affecting millions of people’s travel plans. Forecasters believe disruption’s likely to continue for several more days as light prevailing winds are failing to clear the cloud. The volcano in the south of Iceland began erupting on Wednesday, sending plumes of ash several kilometres into the air. Scientists have warned it could trigger a chain-reaction in other volcanoes in the country.

@XrisWolf I mean only that the starvation could had been the long – term result of erruption of that volcano, like old that man said. Old straight men know similar stories from the reface, like my grandmother who used to live in moumtains and reportedely saw huge red glow in the sky( now she’s dead but my mother reported that to me during someone else was telling the same).

Volcanoes do cause things alike, take Tambora in 1815 (next year was known as the Year without summer), but those eruptions were/have to be big ones to cover the entire planet…
This current one is too small to make such an effect, and I dont quite remember any large-scale eruptions from 1939/40.. USSR do had many famines, but not due to volcanoes.

Well I was just sayin’ it in general… just look at it, one small volcano (its nothing compared to e.g. Laki) causes so much problem.. we think we are the rulers of the Earth, and see, we are so fragile and dependant. We play with out planet, exploit it, though its our one and only home!
@XrisWolf what do you really mean? Don’t forget the ones who suffer from disasters are poor people . Although , reportedely I have heard that after first crime in Katyń, on the same date 70 yers ago, the same volcano errupted and it caused starvation in Russia or Ukraine ( this is what my grandfather’s fellow said).
