I thought the same thing. Did they think that the air conditioning units would never run that long while the plane sits on the tarmac? It just seems incredibly stupid to me.

I can only wonder who at Boeing thought it would be a great idea to put the heat-generating Air Conditioning systems directly under a fuel tank. It just seems incredibly stupid to put flammable materials’ storage directly ontop of heat-producing hardware, almost like putting a pan full of petrol on top of your stove. Why would any sane designer do that? Heat and fire hazards shouldn’t mix, to do so is a needless risk. Considering the size of the 747, there had to be lots of room elsewhere.
