The blanket of ash cloud from Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull volcano has thrown air travel across much of Europe into chaos since it erupted last Wednesday, grounding flights, stranding passengers, and costing the aviation industry alone up to bn in losses so far. On Sunday the volcano appeared to have calmed down, spewing plumes of pure white, unlike the heavy curtain of dark ash seen in previous days. But Iceland’s weather and volcano experts say that despite the decreased activity, they are still getting mixed signals. Al Jazeera’s David Chater reports from a flight above the rim of the volcano.
