air defense ZSU-23 Shilka Tunguska

The Shilka ZSU-23-4 [ZSU = Zenitnaya Samokhodnaya Ustanovka - Anti-aircraft Self-Propelled Gun] is a Self-Propelled Anti-Aircraft Gun (SPAAG) featuring a prominent radar dish that can be folded down mounted on a modified PT-76 chassis. ZSU 23-4 Shilka, is capable of acquiring, tracking and engaging low-flying aircraft (as well as mobile ground targets while either in place or on the move). Employed in pairs 200 meters apart, 400 meters behind battalion leading elements, it is commonly used to surpress ATGM launch sites, such as TOW vehicles. The armament consists of four 23mm cannon with a maximum slant range of 3000 meters. Ammunition is normally loaded with a ratio of three HE rounds to one AP round. Resupply vehicles carry an estimated additional 3000 rounds for each of the four ZSUs in a typical battery. Recent (October 1997) information details ZSU-23-4 updates/modernization being offered by the Ukrainians that include: a new radar system replacing the GUN DISH radar, plus a sensor pod believed to include day/night camera, and a laser rangefinder; and mounted above radar/sensor pod is a layer of six fire-and-forget SAMs, believed to be Russian SA-18/GROUSE. The ZSU-23-4 is a fully integrated, self-propelled antiaircraft system with four liquid-cooled 23-mm automatic cannons mounted on the front of a large, flat, armored turret. The chassis has many components borrowed from other Soviet armored vehicles, and the suspension system resembles that of the PT-76 and ASU 85

@kgbmi7 It was produced in mid 60′s and didn’t saw action on vietnam…
But yeah, aside with the Vulcan, the Shilka is probably the best mobile AAA nowadays

  2. LoboalphaMASTER says:

can anyone translate to me please?

well that and supply lines being broken

  6. alexvasilenko14 says:

NO Russia never buys tec from the US. Never. you don’t see Jest looking like F-22, no they look like MIG’s much better.

  7. alexvasilenko14 says:

wow stop with that Russia makes there own weapons. technology NATO buys from US, not Russia. China buys from Russia, India, and Middle-east countries. Russia does not need your weapons, plus you cant make them, everything in the US is made in China. China own US, Russia is with China, so face the facts. Capitalist.

  8. alexvasilenko14 says:

ha ha wrong, most of the cold war tec made in the U.S. was stolen from CCCP. and communism is better. Reply with something mature. B2 stealth plane was one of the stolen tec.

    lol moonspeak

It’s probably still useful for urban defense

This level of deliberate stupidity is like…it’s like seeing the Earth from space for the first time. It’s…it’s beautiful.

  12. ppitm says:

The battle, yes. But the WWII airwar was decided by the deaths of pilots. The Germans and Japanese ran out.

  13. MrSarMax says:

Just present: 60 shots in a second. 1957.
Really, what would be with the american pilots in Vietnam if we have put such complex of the vietnamese army? And what we saw in Afgan? – americans gave to taliban antiaircraft sistems which forced down our helicopters. WTF?

  14. TheWolfAlpha says:

Pilots training is more expensive than value of his plane. That´s why many armies have teams used for pilots rescue. You can have new plane for pilot quite quickly, but you will have new good pilot only after two or three years of intensive training

  15. sotemot says:

If he makes it back, he will. Though I get your point. Hope you get mine

  16. sovietspyguy says:

Sure, but your expensive pilot is out of the fight if he is not in a plane.

  17. sotemot says:

Do you know how much it costs to train a pilot? Thats a fortune! It takes some month to make a new plane, to make a new pilot takes about 20 years, and add 3 years of education.

  18. sovietspyguy says:

The outcome of a battle isn’t decided by how many pilots you have running around on the ground. If a plane is shot down, that’s one expensive and valuable weapons system that is no longer participating in the battle. Whether the pilot survives is completely irrelevant. Chances are he will be picked up by whoever it is that shot him down in the first place. It doesn’t matter how many millions of dollars he is worth. He can no longer affect the outcome of the battle. And THAT’S the point.

  19. kgbmi7 says:

Shilka is a late 50s weapon system and even today its a decent AAA system. served well in vietnam , but Tunguska or Germanys Gepard have better fire rate and longer range

  20. sotemot says:

Its end of discussion for me.

  21. SAsgarters says:

There’s no “end of discussion” just because you wished there to be.

It still doesn’t matter what happens to the pilot, this is a question of what happens to an aircraft that’s engaged by this system.

It still is a potent weapon and with the upgrades several operators have performed, it’s going to continue to be a potent weapon for a long time.

  22. sotemot says:

Ok, I agree, the plane is screwed if hit by a shilka, the pilot is not, thats my point all along.

Now this is changing the subject, but if you have an AGM65, that shilka is no longer a threat.

But it was a potent weapon, end of discussion.

  23. SAsgarters says:

Who cares if it might save the pilot? Fuck the pilot and stop trying to change the subject..

We’re talking about whether the aircraft can survive the encounter.

  24. sotemot says:

Whats your point? ofc the titanium alloy bathtub is designed to save the pilot. You can will get shout out of they sky but the damn multimillion dollar pilot survives. I dont care what you say, the shilka is outdated.

  25. SAsgarters says:

No, the fucking point is that it’s a catastrophic kill, whether or not the pilot survives.
