Author: admin | Files under Air Deals Video

Korean Air Flight 801 (KE801, KAL801) crashed on August 6, 1997 on approach to Antonio B. Won Pat International Airport, Guam (a United States territory). Flight 801 was normally flown by an Airbus A300, but Korean Air had scheduled the August 5-6 flight to transport Guamanian athletes to the South Pacific Mini Games in American Samoa, the airline designated HL7468, a Boeing 747-300 to fly the route that night. Yes those people are at fault but not as much as the flight crew are. The pilot in command of a civil airliner has a huge responsibility. Every decision theymake must be made with the safety of their passengers as the first concern.

In particular, there was no excuse for their ignoring the minimums call for 3 minutes, there is no excuse for their attempting a visual approach in those conditions and there is NO excuse for 2 experienced pilots to get the TOGA procedure wrong.

Similiar to the American 965 Disaster in Cali, Colombia, because the captain order his copilot to put on the speed brakes but when they got the GPWS Alarm, they did pull up, but the speed brakes were still deployed so the plane’s rate of descent was great, so it impacted the mountain, only 3 survived or so.

On the official transcript of the cockpit voice recorder, 3 whole minutes after the minimums call the FO says “not in sight, missed approach” then after the capitain takes no action he repeats “missed approach”.

Why didnt he begin the go around himself? The captain of an aircraft, like the master of a ship, used to be beyond question. It was unheard of for a first officer to tell the captain he was wrong.

For this reason, 80% of controlled flights into terrain happen with the capt flying

fightingtemeraire: i know nothing about airplanes and aviation, but what you say does makes sense. i guess the pilot made bad judgement cuz he was kinda tired…
but why didnt the co captain say anything? he didnt seem tired also…

They did eventually decide to go around, but they didnt make a very good job of it. Go around procedure is

    Power up
    Nose up
    Gear up
    Flaps up
    Speak up

The captain applied go around power, but then only raised the nose by 1degree. It is normal to bring the nose up at least 15 degrees. The NTSB concluded that, even with the go around procedure being very late, if the captain had made a proper go around starting from when he increased power, he could have saved the aircraft.

I have seen a few cases of pilots being scapegoated for routine operational failures, and this isnt one.

There was NO excuse for the aircraft repeatedly descending below the minimum safe altitude.

There was NO excuse for the flight crew ignoring the “minimums” call (at this point they are required to begin a go around if they cannot see the runway).

There was NO excuse for the failure to execute a proper go around once they finally took notice of the GPWS callouts.

but the thing is that if ANY of the things were happened differently (ex. if it was a sunnier day, if the pilot was a bit more professional and awake, or if the FAA was more responsible), then the crash would have been prevented. we shouldn’t blame anybody…but what we can do is to put a bag in front of your legs the next time you fly ;)

The pilots were tired that is not their fault wouldn’t anyone be tired if they were in their positions? The systems were not working and why were they not working the way that they should be working?

It all comes down to the fault of decisions makers. The management at korean air are at fault and the people who changed the systems were at fault.

Hey, let’s think this: What if the MSAW had been online? Can we be certain that the controller(s) could have distinguished the possible real warning of 801 low altitude from these “nuisance readings” or “nuisance warnings”?

fightingtemeraire: If you have a problem with the Final Report which already says that there were “Multiple Causes” for this accident, then please go & make a formal complaint to the Intl. Aviation Experts who came out with this FINAL REPORT. Sorry to say but these professional Aviation Experts simply do not agree with your delusional, subjective, one dimensional nonsense rammblings of an amateur who also happens to be a RACIST. Keep crying bcus no matter how much you cry it is still amusing :)

finghtingtemeraire: Sorry Mr. Racist who wants to blame EVERYTHING on the pilots. Sorry to say but the international aviation experts who are more qualified than you will ever be in your whle life ALREADY came out with the Final Report saying there were Multiple Causes for this sad accident. Amusing to see a delusional RACIST like YOU rammble on about his own subjective amateur nonsense. Keep crying RACIST.

Its up to the crew to be aware of their altitude and to execute a missed approach.

The captain wats FAR too long before attempting a missed approach and when he finally does, he applies go around power and raises the nose less than 1 degree. Procedure is about 15-20degrees and anyone even with no knowledge of flying would know to pull up. The NTSB determined that even though the go around was so late, if it had been done properly then the crash would be avoided.

…So it is funny that you go out of your way here & try to put all the blame on the pilots when no one even said that the pilots were ‘not responsible’. Anyone can see here that your hateful distorting of facts is unethical & evil. Korean? Who would even believe a hateful person like you who love to distort the truth as you are doing here right now?
What a dirty RACIST. Come back when you no longer have a faulty & evil hating premise. Maybe then others will believe your Korean roots.

Your opinion is biased& unfair bcus it goes against the fair findings made by the international aviation experts& the Final Report which does not single out the pilots as the only ones responsible.

You make a valid point but my opinion is exactly that… an opinion and it’s up to me what I believe. I may well be wrong but who cares? Unless your penultimate statement was sacastic (which by the way, doesn’t come accross very well written on here) your last statement doesn’t make sense. I am not a racist, I am a man with an opinion. Didn’t want to mention this before but my father is Korean….. so how exactly am I a racist?

Since your subjective, biased, & unfair opinion completely ignores the fair results of the Final Report made by the international Aviation Experts (which says that there were multiple causes for the accident), it is obvious that you have a big problem. No one ever said that the pilots were ‘not responsible’, but you go out of your way & try to put all the blame on the pilots. Yeah sure you would say the same thing even if it was another race. Obviously a sad RACIST.
