Air Car by Guy Negre on CNN

Guy Negre of mdi’s Air Car engine that runs on compressed air. Emissions are only filtered air that’s cleaner than outside air. 300 bars of pressure in carbon-fibre & kevlar air tanks. Car can travel at 110 km/hr and has a 150 km driving range. Refilling can be done by plugging in at home or at a special high-pressure air station. Dual-energy models use small amounts of bio-fuels that can extend the range to over 1400 kms. Pollution free vehicle that produces zero emissions. When the car stops at traffic lights, the engine stops so no energy is lost because there’s no idling. Go to www.catvolution.com for more information. A hybrid air/gas car would’ve been smarter

  2. fizzguts says:

Hmm I don’t think they are embarrassed at all They have according to themselves sold over 40 franchises at a cool $250,000 a pop.
Nice work if you can get it.
The New Zealand and the Israeli franchise holders have given up on MDI in the NZ case because they never got a working engine and according to the franchise holder MDI wanted another $1,000,000!
Mind you the NZ franchise holder have burnt through 29 million on their mesh computing project So whats a few million here and there :-)

  3. TheAdler83 says:

They must have been really embarrassed at launching a big PR campaign saying how these futuristic cars were going to be released soon and then it all came to nothing because they couldn’t make the concept work.

  4. fizzguts says:

If you google e.volution south africa you’ll find a big announcement very much like this clip

    Only it was in 2000

Opps Maybe it’s because this POC doesn’t actually work

  5. TheAdler83 says:

She said the car was due to be on the road by the end of 2004. It’s a tad over 5 years past that now so what happened to the big unveiling with symphony orchestra accompanyment?

  6. fizzguts says:

“fizzguts, what do you know about air cars or any motors.”

Hheaps I can read, have a brain and build all sorts of engines unlike you who believes any green washing lie coming down the road

  7. PaulWood1346 says:

fizzguts, what do you know about air cars or any motors. You full of bullshit so FUCK OFF

  8. fizzguts says:

    Dung in a bucket
If you were 8 years old I’d excuse that post BUT YOU ARE NOT.
What you need to do is have an even simpler system rather than having air compressors and tank and air motors. Just have the rear axle driving a chain via a sprocket to a sprocket on the front axle WOW PROBLEM SOLVED Just have to always drive down hill

THAT WAS SARCASM. OK? GOT IT? But it contains the jist of why what you posted was so stupid

  9. PaulWood1346 says:

I have a idea for the compressed air tanks. Why not have a piston compressor hooked up to the air tanks and a belt from the compressor wheel to the back groved pully wheel of the car wheel. and when it runs then the compressor will be pumping air into one of the spare tanks then one can switch over to the spare tank and back to the other when its empty, like switch from tank to tank when one or the other goes empty and you never run out of air

  10. fizzguts says:

?? Can’t you read down a couple of comments? All the explanation you can handle

  11. 22renegade says:

i wonder why there is no updated version of this car?! i guess the oil loby was on work again

  12. fizzguts says:

cant they use the exaust to spin a turbine for the compresser or generator?

No Each of the stages loses more energy than it gains

  13. dopeythebde says:

im no genious but, cant they use the exaust to spin a turbine for the compresser or generator? just a thought.

  14. fizzguts says:

They will be available next year, always next year and they have been available “next year” since 2000.
The problems are the actual range under test is about 5 miles (MDI’s only published real world test) and there is no way to do much better than about 15miles
Second problem is the system is very inefficient so between $3 and $5 of electricity is needed for the compressor to fill the tanks for a theoretical 20 mile range
    (MDI USA figures)

  15. haimaphil says:

Where are these cars? We just hear about new concepts, but nothing new is available.

  16. Tronox24 says:

Sooner or later oil will run out…

  17. fizzguts says:

“Air car Will destroy US economy”

    Don’t be an idiot
The air car is a short range POC A long running CON designed to sell franchises.

  18. junevi2000 says:

Air car Will destroy US economy and all Mideast countries dependent on petroleum export. Devastating effect on US economy already weakened by depression. Because all global transactions in oil trade is carried in US dollar, if we use all the non conventional energy, all these US dollar will, will come back home to US causing hyperinflation. In other words oil keeps the economy of US going. They will do all their power to discourage any source of energy other than oil.

  19. fizzguts says:

Because that would expose it as a short range (only test gave a range of 5 miles) low powered, ongoing (since 1998) CON.

  20. amaii112 says:

wow it’s amazing, why can’t you buy them???

  21. imanerd36 says:

If I am correct, they pretty much used compressed air and put it in a piston engine. I hope these a-holes didn’t get issued a patent for a extremely obvious idea.

  22. fizzguts says:

Thanks! Definitely raised a smile at this end of the world

  23. Luvanicebum says:

I want a car that runs on the broken dreams of the gullible. 100 mpr (miles per regret)

  24. robertyt2 says:

There is a sucker born every minute.
Negre’s air car is a scam. Those air cars can only go a few miles on a full charge. $2. to run a car for 4 miles is pretty steep.

  25. JohnCBriggs says:

It looks like there are serious limitations to the Air Car. They are using 80 gallons (300 liters) of storage space to store about 16 KWH of energy. This compares with 16 KWH of electricity in a Li-Ion battery that takes up about 14 gallons (53 liters) of space. Finally, the equivalent energy in gasoline would be only 0.44 gallons (1.65 liters)

    Compressed Air 80 gallons
    Li-Ion battery 14 gallons
    Gasoline 0.44 gallons
